Sat 17th Nov: Bernstock Speirs 30 at Fred Gallery

Bernstock Speirs are celebrating 30 years of making cosmic millinery by taking over the walls of Fred Gallery with hats, history of press clippings, sketches and moving image. It's gorgeous to read the stories behind the archive signature styles, re-made all in red including a version of The Topless Hat which appeared on Kylie Minogue's debut album. There is also a wall of photographic prints showing the personalities they shot for look books in the late 1980's including Fashion Buyers, Editors, Musicians and actresses - a trait of casting "real talent" de-riguer right now!
Learn more about the duo via a documentary video of interviews at both the show and their Brick Lane studio over on Crane.TV

Friday 16th Nov: Iconostatus by Walter Hugo at Four Corners

Walter Hugo's latest project launch "Iconostatus" has come about from a 3 month residency at East End gallery Four Corners which he used as a site specific base for the concept.  Instead of capturing personalities from his own extended network, for this venture Walter wanted to celebrate the local community of Roman Road and randomly stopped characters as he came across them in the area.  The result is a wall of hand painted and gilded portraits echoing religious iconography, elevating the every day subjects to a celebration of street culture and re-defining a miss-interpreted / mis-understood sector of society.  Even without necessarily knowing this exact motivation behind the gathering of fresh faces, it has a merit all of its own just for its aesthetic richness and depth of pigment - laboriously layered with creative partner Zoniel utilising her technical expertise.
Visit the gallery to see the large box construction built to work as the pin hole camera on site.......... and physically see the tin plates positioned in frame ......... and bottles of chemicals cluttering up the sink to absorb a sense of this pioneering reaapropriation of an antiquarian  process.

Sunday: Party Patternity Style

For Anna Murray's 30th birthday party, the Patternity girls turned the Russian Bar into a replica of their current residency at Dalston Superstore so that for one night only they had their very own stripey venue.  Guests were asked to join the dazzle theme by dressing up in stripes - here are a few of the outcomes.  It was so crammed and stuffed with stripes that it was actually difficult to snap the complete story but here is a little insight with special focus on my personal favourite - Helen Macintyre who specially stitched and illustrated Haring style lederhosen!!!  I assembled a suit with a shirt from a 2Tone shop in Camden and £3 nail stickers from Claires accessories - perfect!  (If only I still had these magic Edie eyes from a shoot I did the previous day by Adam John)
Photos are a mix from both my camera and Instagram with an additional 2 from Kim Howells.
Happy Birthday Anna - one of the greatest girls I feel very lucky to have in my life!
