Monday 5th June: THE FIFTH DIMENSION AT 56 for the E17 Art Trail

This year the theme of the E17 Art Trail is STEAM; Science Technology Engineering Art & Mathematics. Step into the 56 dimension and teleport yourself to their paper filled parallel universe, BIG on fun.  An installation by duo prop maker & artist Rosy Nicholas and set designer Alex Cunningham has gigantic versions of everything usually found in the cafe.  Take a photo of yourself with some of the "Alice In Wonderland" size props and enter their competition for the best pic of the day to win a free coffee.  Pick up a copy of the entire art trail guide and set about the journey across Walthomstow of exhibitions and events on until the 18th June.

Monday 29th May: Paper Flower, Summer Headdress Workshop at No. 56

Here are shots from my Paper Flower, Summer Headdress Workshop at No. 56 where a special elderflower cocktail was on the menu for the night "Fly Freddys Flower Fizz" ! I taught the basic principals of paper folding which were then put to the test in making feathers, leaves and flowers. The same principal for one bloom translates to other varieties which we constructed from ranunculus to rose via daises and Chrysanthemum. The whole spectrum of papers were used to mix'n'match everyone's own headdress to take away and develop.

Monday 21st March: "Social Fabric: African Textiles Today" at The William Morris Gallery

"Social Fabric:  African Textiles Today" is the latest temporary exhibition at The William Morris Gallery showing fabrics from Eastern & Southern Africa.  The oblong prints worn in many various ways each carry their own visual agenda in the graphics to convey social, political, religious and personal messages.  Therefore they become an important record of social history as commentary on subjects such as Nelson Mandela or the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.  My personal favourite Kanga inscription resonates with my character "I may be quiet but there's a lot in my heart" of the Prickly Fruit that's sharp but is used specifically for the pigment properties of its flesh for colouring food or dying hair.  I also love the garment by the London based fashion label CHiCHia with graphic type depicting the designer's favourite proverbs and sayings.
